6 Ways to Make Church "Un-boring"

1. Change your attitude and outlook
Some people walk into church and sit down in the pew with the mindset that the service will be boring… long before the pastor even walks onstage! Instead of thinking how long and drawn-out the service will be, make a list of a few of your favorite things about the service. Maybe you like the upbeat music that’s played or how the pastor starts off each sermon with a joke. Go deeper and think about the new things you’ve learned and how much you’ve grown spiritually because of church. The next time you attend a church service, you’ll have plenty of things to look forward to.

2. Grow in God
Some people are what is known as “Sunday Christians”- they try to grow in God by going to the weekly church service, but then they don’t do anything for the rest of the week to go deeper in their spiritual walk. Don’t be one of these people! Make time to pray and read your Bible at least once a day. You can pick up a girls’ devotional, or even just read the devotions inside of Girlz 4 Christ! When you do this, church will seem less like a spiritual cramming session and more like a time to gather with other believers and encourage one another.

3. Get plugged in

Some people think church is boring because they feel as if they are just a number in the crowd, and it wouldn’t make a difference whether they came or not. SO not true! God wants you to go to church for two very important reasons: so that you can grow in Him, and you can fellowship with other believers. One way to accomplish both of these is to get plugged into a small group. Youth groups are great because you’ll have the chance to connect with Christians your age and the sermon topics are geared towards things you do in everyday life. If your church doesn’t have a youth group, try to join a women’s group, a Sunday school, or a family group.

4. Serve to see the bigger picture
Some people expect to go to church to get “spiritually fed”. While we all have “holy hungers”, we also need to realize that the people we sit with at church have needs, too. Explore the needs that your church has by volunteering in different ways. There are tons of ways you can serve at church; you can be a greeter, a children’s church helper, an office assistant, or a ministry worker, just to name a few. Ask a church leader how to sign up with something that interests you. You’ll feel more like a part of the church when you actually contribute your time and effort.

5. Invite friends
Some people don’t like church because of the other people in the church- too old, too young, too uptight, too loose. Even if you feel like an outsider at your church, try to reach out and make friends anyway. Better yet, invite your friends that don’t attend a church. Friends can make church seem a lot less boring. Before the church service, you can catch up on talking, you can sit together during the service, and after, service, you can reflect together on the message. Which brings us to our final way to make church “un-boring”…

6. Reflect
The whole reason you go to church is so that you can hear from the Lord. Often times that comes in the form of a sermon that the pastor gives, but it could come from anywhere- a chat with a friend, the way the person in the pew behind you acted, even from the donut that the morning greeter served you! Take some quiet time after church to think, pray and reflect and try to see what message God was trying to convey to you. Even if you think church is boring, God has you there for a reason- do you know what that reason is?

Review: Eco Lips Gold Lip Balm

Eco Lips Gold Lip Balm
Distributed by Eco Lips

‘Tis the season…. for colds, wind, and…chapped lips. I know that I require lip balm at this time of year, but I don’t always like the sickeningly sweet flavors. Plus, it really disturbs me when I can’t even pronounce most of the ingredients on my lip balm. (Just think of all the times you lick your lips and you end up swallowing all those chemicals!) I was so glad when I found what seems to be the perfect lip balm; I’ll be using it this winter and every winter from now on!

Eco Lips is a distributor of all kinds of lip balm. (I also like their Dagoba-flavored, their SPF Lip Care, and their Eco Tints.) Eco Lips Gold’s slogan is “The Ultimate Lip Moisterizer”, and I agree. It is great for so many reasons:
-It’s USDA certified organic
-It’s unflavored. I know that I occaisionally like flavored lip balm, but often times I don’t want to consistently taste Wild Berry Razz Jam on my lips!
-It’s color-free too, so it will match any outfit or makeup scheme.
-It’s non-GMO.
-Have a special diet or food allergies? No worries; it’s gluten-free.
-Cruelty-free. No animals were harmed in the making of this lip balm!
-It’s a great source of Vitamin E, which is really important in improving your skin’s health.
-Made in the USA
-It keeps your lips moisturized for hours, because it includes jojoba oil and other good-for-you ingredients!
-Once you’ve used up the lip balm, you can recycle the tube.

Now, with all these great benefits, there must be some sort of catch, right? Well, I have yet to find any flaws, although the initial price is a little steep: $3.49 for a .15 oz. tube. However, I think it’s definitely worth the price as it is the best lip balm to have ever touched my lips!

Since I like to take this lip balm everywhere, I also got a little accessory for it. Eco Lips also sells this snazzy Eco Lips Carabiners:

For only $1.99, this carabiner can clip your lip balm to virtually anything: belt loop, backpack, purse, keychain…seriously anything! The carabiner is even made from recycled aluminum, so it’s good for the environment AND good for you (because you get to consistently enjoy natural organic lip balm!).

These and more products can be found at EcoLips.com, or possibly at a retailer near you!

Countdown to Courageous: It’s Here!

Today’s the day! You can now see Courageous in theaters across America (and even in a few other nations as well)!

As you see it today, this weekend, or any time thereafter, leave a comment here telling us your favorite scene, or something that you learned or were inspired by in the movie.

Can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

As you watch the movie, see if you can find these hidden “Easter Eggs”. If you can’t find them all, then you’d better go watch Courageous a second time!

-You can get a quick glance of the fire station shown in Fireproof. Also, listen to what the news story is saying when Adam watches TV in the evening.
-Look for a Facing the Giants poster in one of the kid’s bedrooms.
-There’s a scene from the Flywheel movie as well! Can you find it?
-This movie is all about families, and you can find a famous (and large!) family making a cameo! While you won’t see all of the 19 Kids, you can see the boys running a race and other Duggars crying in church pews.

Book Review: Double Take by Melody Carlson

If you’ve been reading Girlz 4 Christ Magazine, then you’ve read book reviews about some of Melody Carlson’s books, such as the Words from the Rock series and the Never Been Kissed novel. You’ve probably read at least a few of her 200 books, which include the Diary of a Teenage Girl series. But, just released this month is her newest novel, written just for teens:

Double Take is not your ordinary Amish fiction! In fact, it’s more like a modern-day version of The Prince and the Pauper. A 17-year-old New Yorker heiress named Madison VanBuren is tired of the daily pressures of her life, so she jumps into her fancy convertible and heads out on a day trip to the countryside. When she finds a quaint town, she meets an Amish girl by the name of Anna Fisher, who is just as tired with her simple and mundane life as Madison is tired of her hectic one. They realize that, without Maddie’s makeup and accessories and without Anna’s kapp and Amish dress, they actually look like identical twins! So it’s decided that Anna will spend a week in Maddie’s penthouse while Maddie spends her spring break helping on Anna’s relatives’ farm. Will rich girl Maddie learn to work in the plain life? Will Amish Anna be overwhelmed by the modern technological world? Will anyone find out about this secret switch? Guess you’ll have to read Double Take by Melody Carlson to find out! You can find it in Christian bookstores or wherever Revell or Baker Publishing Group books are sold.

I really enjoyed this book (read it all in less than 24 hours!), not just because Melody Carlson is among my favorite authors, but because it is a unique tale of two different worlds colliding. Both girls are thrust into completely new experiences and learn to depend on God along the way. Plus, you get to learn a little about the daily life of both the Amish and New Yorkers along the way!

JUST FOR FUN QUESTIONS (Share your answers in a comment!)
-Do you plan on reading Double Take?
-Have you read any other books by Melody Carlson? Which ones? Which were your faves?
-If you could switch lives with someone completely different from you, who would you switch lives with?

Giving to Girlz 4 Christ

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” – Mark 12:41-44

I love the above true story because in it, Jesus explains that it doesn’t matter if you give a lot or a little- any gift can make a BIG difference! I’d like to explain to you how giving to G4C, whether you can afford to give a large amount or just two copper coins, can make a BIG difference!

We at G4C believe in giving tithes and offerings as a sacrifice to the Lord. Everything that has been given to us is a gift from Him, so it’s the least we can do to share His blessings with others. I believe that this sort of giving should be done on a personal level, but G4C as an organization also gives. Because of our limited funds, we have NO paid staff members, or an office space, or a fancy program or anything like that. But we still take an example from the widow that Jesus saw and give out of what we have to bless others. Here are a few things that we have done recently:

-We gave the the World Vision education fund.
-We donated soaps and other necessities to Care Bags 4 Kids.
-We provided shoes for the impoverished in South America through Soles 4 Souls.
-We’ve given money to several mission organizations so that teen girls can participate in missions experiences.
-In addition, we have sent Girlz 4 Christ magazine to dozens of girls in tough situations at no cost to them.

When you donate to G4C, and even when you purchase items from our shop, you are supporting a ministry that is affecting so many girls and their families in the name of Jesus Christ. You are also helping us support worthy causes like the ones mentioned above. Please prayerfully consider helping to finance our ministry, and with it, you can support people all around the world!
