Crafts that Put the CHRIST in CHRISTmas!

While counting down the days to December 25th, you may be a little overwhelmed. Have you finished getting gifts for your parents, siblings, friends, teachers, coworkers, and church staff? Are you running out of money? Have you been so busy with shopping, finals, and everything else on your plate that you haven’t even begun decorating?

Take a deep breath…
…and breathe out.
The Christmas season was created as a time to reflect on all that God has done for us. But like so many other times in life, there is so much to distract us, that Christmas can sometimes become meaningless!
We’ve found a few ways to reflect on the miracle of Jesus’ birth, while still providing an opportunity to decorate and create low-cost gifts for friends and family. Here are a few pins we’ve found on this. Be sure to follow Girlz 4 Christ on Pinterest for more ideas like this!
Make a stable ornament for your tree!
Make a beautiful nativity ornament!
Scripture Ornaments. Use Bible program like ESword or Theophilos to make these and you don't have to make any copies. :)

Now it’s your turn! Share with us any crafts you made this season, especially if they celebrate the reason for this (and all) seasons!

A Trip to Amish Country

Amish Country

Have you ever been to Amish Country? Do you know what Amish are? I learned about the Amish several years ago, and was fascinated by each thing I read about them. The Amish are a denomination of Christians that are quite a bit different from other denominations! They take “in the world, not of the world” to a whole new level by not using electricity, dressing in old-fashioned clothes, and even speaking their own language!

Ever since learning about the Amish, I really wanted to visit a community where they lived. While spending a year in Central Ohio, I was surprised to learn that Holmes County, the area with the largest Amish population, was only a two-hour drive from my house! During that year I visited three times, one trip for every season except winter. While I enjoyed all the new things that each season brought, I especially loved the fall during harvest time (where everyone used horses instead of tractors!).

Upon entering Holmes County, it’s common to experience an overall relaxing feeling. Suddenly, it doesn’t matter that it’s difficult to find a wireless hotspot or are stuck going ten miles per hour behind a buggy. Being surrounded by people dedicated to hard work and simplicity allows you to prioritize what is truly important. Since millions of people come to Amish Country for this experience, why not stay someplace that reflects these values?

Where to Stay

Blessings Lodge is located within walking distance of downtown Berlin, Ohio, and is a wonderful centralized location for everything going on in the heart of Amish Country. Although it has the conveniences of indoor plumbing, electricity, and cable television, it still reflects the Christian values that are shared with the Amish.

Each room at the Blessings Lodge is unique, and my sister and I enjoyed our stay at the “Faith” Simple Blessings Cabin. It was her first visit to Holmes County and my third, but it was the first time for both of us to stay at this cabin, which we agreed was our favorite part of this getaway! The porch offered amazing countryside views (and there were binoculars to gain a better perspective). The kitchen allowed us to save money by making our own meals, and we were surprised to be greeted with Amish cookies waiting for us on the kitchen table! The bathroom featured a Jacuzzi tub, and there were enough beds to sleep up to seven people. These were just a few of the amenities. The owners did an excellent job provided special touches to make the Blessings Cabin feel like home, such as games, books, and décor that can only be found in Amish Country.

We absolutely loved the convenience and warmness of Blessings Lodge. It was a wonderful place to stay, but I also spent a weekend at Turkey Hollow Campground in Millersburg once. That was a fun experience of primitive camping, boating, and simply enjoying nature.

What to Do

No matter where you spend the night, here are some things I did in Holmes County during the day:

-Toured Yoder’s Amish Home. These two houses were previously Amish-owned, although there are still many Amish working here and in their barn. You can also tour a schoolhouse and take a buggy ride on this property.

-Ate cheese! Guggisburg Cheese is where Baby Swiss was invented, and they have a beautiful Swiss-themed shop, park, and restaurant. Heini’s Cheese a large shop where many people come here just to sample the dozens of cheeses and fudge!

-Visited the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center. I learned so much about these conservative Christian branches, and realized that the most important thing is that we all love Jesus!
-Saw animals at The Farm at Walnut Creek. There is a drive through (or wagon ride) safari where you can feed and pet all kinds of exotic animals! There’s also blacksmithing, an Amish home, and more!

-Shopped at the dozens of gift shops and restaurants. One of the benefits of simple living is that many of the things you can buy are locally-made!

Tips for Visiting

You may be wondering why I’ve only shared scenic photos of the area. Even in research, you may find photos of Amish homes, schools, buggies, and belongings, but very few of Amish people. Many Amish find it disrespectful to have their photo taken, so aim the camera away from them.

The Amish may have different beliefs, but don’t say they are “wrong” or “confused”. Like us, Amish believers love God, and know that He has called all of us to live for Him. It’s just that our individual callings might vary! Use your visit to Amish country as an opportunity to celebrate who we are in Christ!

For the HEALTH FOODIE
Good Belly Whether you want to start the New Year healthy, are having any sort of stomach troubles, or are just looking for a tasty beverage, you should try out Good Belly Probiotic Juice Drinks. There are so many good things about it: there’s a special kind of probiotic strand in the juice, it’s organic, and comes in either shots or quarts (I tried the quarts in several different flavors and highly recommend them). Some of the drinks are gluten-free and others provide a multivitamin. The only thing that is lacking is that these great-tasting drinks are actually not 100% juice. But because this is an innovative company, I’m sure they’re working towards a wider variety of options. I took Good Belly as part of their 12-Day Challenge and felt much better after doing so. You can also try their 12-Day Challenge and receive coupons by signing up at goodbelly.com.
Primal Strips You will love Primal Strips Vegan Jerky, even if you aren’t vegan! Although they don’t taste the same as real jerky, they come in a variety of flavors, some that are even better than the beef version! These are great for those
who are on special diets, because they are
nutritious, gluten-free, non-gmo, vegan, kosher,
and preservative-free. They’re perfect for on the
go as well. Visit primalspiritfoods.com

Blimey Cow

(Editor’s Note: This is a condensed version of our interview with the producers of Blimey Cow. To read the full article, check out “Take 9 With Blimey Cow” in the Summer 2013 issue of Girlz 4 Christ Magazine. Don’t get the magazine? Subscribe for free!)

Justin Bieber. Jamie Grace. Julian Smith. Fred. It seems like every few months, another YouTube channel comes out of the woodwork, goes viral, and the producers become famous. But out of all of today’s YouTube producers, there is no one quite as unique and down-to-earth as the cast of Blimey Cow.

Blimey Cow was started by two Nashville-native brothers Josh and Jordan Taylor, later joined by Josh’s wife Kelly. Although they’ve produced a variety of videos, they are best known for their weekly special, Messy Mondays. Generally, Josh writes the script, and Jordan hosts the video along with a slew of guest stars (a regular guest star is their sister Amy). Although this terrific trio is very busy with making videos, working on their new audio network, and living in the real world, we invite you to have the chance to “Take 5” with this family.
1. Where did the name Blimey Cow come from?
We just came up with it on the fly when we first decided to make videos. I really have no idea what we were thinking. And now we’re stuck with it.
2. When most people post a funny video on YouTube, they hope that it will go viral. Did you ever expect your videos to go THIS viral?
I legitimately never thought our audience would grow this much. I just always figured that we did really niche video. I had no idea this many people would relate to and appreciate our perspective!
3. In addition to Messy Mondays, you occasionally create other videos, such as Batman, Messyges, and personal videos. How is the creation process for these different than the creation process for Messy Mondays?
They are completely different beasts. Messy Mondays is like a well-oiled machine at this point. It is fun to try other things from time to time. But Messy Mondays takes a lot of our creative energy every week so we have to pace ourselves.
4. Name a few of the things you’ve been privileged to do because of your work with Blimey Cow.
I think my favorite thing about all of this are the amazing messages and emails we get from people thanking us for what we are doing and begging us never to stop. Those encouragements bring a tear to my eye. One of my favorite letters we received, I keep on our fridge to remind me why we do what we do.
5. Making these videos isn’t a career, right? So what do you guys actually do?
Jordan is a full time student, Kelli is a stay-at-home wife (in the middle of turning her website SheLearnsAsSheGoes.com into a source of income), and I (Josh) am a patent draftsman.

Thank you, Taylors! We are looking forward to this week’s Blimey Cow episodes on YouTube!

Unbroken Beauty by Lily Garay

(for Q&A Lily’s questions & statements will be in bold. Anything said by Mindy Galvin will be in italics)

That moment you look into the mirror and don’t like what you see. Your hair is limp, you’re too fat, and you never look good. When you look at yourself you don’t see what others see and even though you believe in Jesus, you don’t understand what it is about you that He loves. Perhaps you have an eating disorder and you don’t see any hope at all. Maybe it’s hard for you to talk about it or even say anything, but there was a girl who did and this is her story.

She was so focused on becoming more thin to achieve beauty that she was pushing everyone and everything away from her. It was then she realized that she had to cling to God. That the one true thing she had left was God. She wanted to see herself the way that Jesus saw her. She opened up to her mom and lots of late night talks and prayers are the only things that got through this. But let’s rewind and start from the very beginning.

Mindy Galvin has had issues with her appearance since before pre-school! She grew up in church, has been writing songs for God almost all her life, and is currently a singer/songwriter, conference speaker, author, and youth pastor. Yet, at the age of 19 (she’s now 21) she started to have an eating disorder. It’s not that people didn’t love her or support her. It was about how she saw herself. Because of this, Mindy, has a very different outlook on life. She has let it change for the better. She is currently writing a  devotional called, “Unbroken Beauty”. Mindy says, “The devotional is about body image and how society sort of degrades beauty for girls and makes you feel insecure. It’s also going to be going along with one of the songs that I’m writing. The song talks about the time I had an eating disorder and Jesus showed me how to see myself through His eyes.

I think it’s so cool that you are turning your story into such a testimony! I also love that you are using music to spread the word and love of God. Tell me, how did you get started? I’ve been singing and writing songs since I can remember. I felt a strong calling when I was about 5. The second I heard the song “Jesus Freak”  ( by DC talk) I started writing songs and got music together. I went to a business/music camp and that has helped me in my journey with music.

I would say that you have a sound like Superchick and Barlow Girl. How would you describe it? I would probably describe it as a Christian Paramore. It’s definitely like a poppy rock feel.

Where do you find your writing inspiration? I really take in the emotions of myself and people around me. In devotion time I write things I am learning as a Christian and as I’m learning things with my walk with Jesus. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with whole songs in my head. It’s really just God.

What is some advice would you give singer/songwriters? I would say to be true to yourself, be unique, and don’t be afraid what God is telling you to say. A lot of times people tell me that I shouldn’t be so upfront with my faith in my songs and that I should use analogies. It’s really important to be blatant with exactly what you’re trying to say and who you’re talking about.

What is some advice you would give anyone who isn’t a singer/songwriter? Learn how to trust God and hold on to your faith. It’s so easy to lose track of who you are and what you believe. If you wait in the Lord it strengthens your relationship with Him and others.

You are different!

Recognizing Your Own “Difference”..Is Far More Important
Than Others Recognizing It.
 Most Focus on..Their Weakness – Dr.Mike Murdock

As this week starts, we want you to be inspired and encouraged.
Go out there and live.
Don’t look at what you aren’t or can’t be.
Look a head to what you are and what you
are going to be!
You are chosen and you are righteous.
You are the Lords and He has great plans for your life.

Psalm 1

New King James Version (NKJV)

The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,

    Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law he meditates day and night.

He shall be like a tree

Planted by the rivers of water,

That brings forth its fruit in its season,

    Whose leaf also shall not wither;

And whatever he does shall prosper.

The Difference of a Dollar

As we approach the Christmas season, we know that you are probably stretched financially. We know it might be too much to ask to make a year-end gift to G4C. So, instead of asking you to make a large Christmas contribution, we’d like to ask you for something else.

We’d like for you to donate $1.

One dollar.

One-hundred pennies.

Twenty nickels.

Ten dimes.

And for those of you living outside the U.S. and Canada, that’s .80 in Euros, .95 in Australian dollars, 13 in Mexican Pesos, or 157 in Nigerian Naira.

You may think that one dollar is so small and insignificant for you, and you might not even want to waste the two minutes it takes to make a donation. But for G4C, something as small as one dollar can make a BIG difference…

One dollar is enough to keep our website active for a month.

One dollar is enough to bring G4C to a girl in need through our ministry partnerships.

One dollar is enough to run a contest.

One dollar is enough to replace a few of the “little” office supplies, like pens and journals.

One dollar is enough to show that YOU care about making a difference in the lives of teens and preteens around the world!

As this is a season of giving, we would like to give a gift to you as well! When you make your donation, specify if you would like to receive a digital copy of either our 90-Day Devotional or our Recipe Sampler. It’s our way of saying Merry Christmas to wonderful supporters like you!
